Power To The Punter
Horse Racing
This section contains a number of useful tools to be used when you bet on horse racing. A variety of systems are also explained which you may want to try. A system is basically a set of defined rules you use when making your selections. Rules may include ratings, prices, going, course, trainers, jockeys etc and must be followed religiously.
Staking Systems
There are a countless number of staking systems that you can use in order to improve your profitability and we've tried to cover a few of them below.
This system works on the principle that the higher the selections price then there is less chance of it winning. Therefore the higher the selection price then the smaller the stake you place. Enter your nominal stake and place the percentage figure of that stake on your selection. Click the title above to see the spreadsheet.
This simple system should really only be used when the strike rate percentage is above 45%. Place 1 unit on a selection and if it loses then you place only 1 unit on the next selection. If the first selection wins then you place 1 unit plus half your profit onto the next selection. Regardless of whether that selection wins or loses then you go back to 1 unit for the following selection. Click the title to see the calculator of your next stake if you have a winner.
Starting with an initial bank of eg £1000 you place a certain percentage such as 1% (£10) on each selection. When the bank reaches certain limits then you increase /decrease the percentage to be placed on each selection. eg if the bank was to increase to £2000 then you would increase the percentage on each selection to 2% (£20). Alternatively if the bank was reduced to £500 then the percentage on each selection would be reduced to 1/2% (£5). You can set any number of different threshholds and the theory is that your balance should never be reduced to zero.
You place a 1 unit stake on your first selection and if that wins you place all of the returns onto the next selection. Whether the next selection wins or loses then you revert back to 1 unit for the next event. This staking system should only be applied to selections with a probability of over 50% (1/1 or above).

Betting Systems
To find a system horse just follow these very simple rules:-
Look for all the Claiming Stakes races
Look at the forecast favourite horse
Look to see if this horse is either Strongly Fancied (SF) of Fancied (F)
No bet if the forecast is odds-on
Fancied (F) horses must be shorter than 3/1
If a horse fits these 5 rules then it is a system horse.
Do not back in maiden Claiming races with the words "Claiming Stakes" in the title.
Simple system based on 4 variables. You will need any paper or website with speed ratings.
To qualify a horse must be:
1) Top rated in the speed ratings (usually signified by a dot)
2) Finished in the top 3 last time out
3) Favourite
4) Is running within 4 days of its last outing
Select all non-handicap races with fields of up to and including 12 declared runners.
Eliminate Amateur, Apprentice and Ladies races.
Check any horse that won last time out to see if it's tipped by "Form" of "The Sporting Life" and if the selection is above 1/1(2.0) in price.
You will find Form's tips for each race in the box at the top of the page near the race card.
1 - Handicaps of 8 or more runners only.
2 - Ground must be good or firm.
3 - Use only those horses in first six of betting forecast.
4 - Eliminate horses not amongst the top four weights.
5 - Eliminate horses that have not run within the last fourteen days.
6 - Selection is the lowest weight of the remaining horses.
7 - If no horse remains then no bet.
Concentrate on HANDICAP CHASES. with 8 to 12 runners.
The selection must be carrying 11st-7lbs or less to qualify.
The horse must have been out this season and must have the best recent form of the horses which qualify.
In the event of there being several horses with comparable form, choose the one ridden by the best jockey.
If the favourite for the race is odds on - no bet.
Stake one point to win unless the selection is 8-1 or above then 1 point each way.
UK Racecourses
This is a system for National Hunt Racing that is based on the fact that trainers are creatures of habit.
If a trainer wins a race of a certain type at a certain course you can be sure that a similar race will be targeted in the future.
To qualify in any category a trainer must have had runners in at least 15 races with a minimum 25% strike rate.
System Bets - Any horse that fits the above criteria and is in the top 3 on the racing posts Top Speed ratings. (No bet if more than one qualifier in same race)
This system uses the new 'TOPDRAW' table in the Racing Post.
Rules
Only races with 8 - 16 runners
Racing Post betting forcast favourite
Must be drawn in sector highlighed by 'Topdraw'
To qualify selection must be a distance and going winner (use RP forecast going). On the All Weather selection must have won over course and distance.
This system uses the 'NAPS COMPETITION' table in the Racing Post.
Our selection is the NAP of any tipster that is on a losing sequence of 10 or more also the current losing sequence must equal the longest losing sequence.
To keep qualifiers to a minimum we are only interested in the three tipsters with the worst record. If more than 1 qualifier in a race no bet.
This system is based on the practices of the great professional punter Alec Bird.
Race Selection: The type of race best suited to this type of bet is 2YO & 3YO Maidens.
