Glossary
Accumulator - A multiple selection bet in which every selection must win for the bet to succeed.
Ante Post - Betting on an event in advance of the day of the event.
Arbitrage - Where a variation in odds available allows a punter to back all possible outcomes and still guarantee a win.
Back - To back a team, horse or outcome is to bet on the that selection to win. Traditionally this is the only bet at bookmakers, but online betting exchanges now allow the punter to oppose or lay an outcome.
Banker - a selection that must win for the rest of your bets to succeed.
Betting Exchange - Unlike a bookmaker who sets and offers the odds or prices, a betting exchange allows bettors to select or offer their own prices and matches the bets accordingly. The site takes a proportion of all winning bets but the odds available are generally higher than standard bookmakers, even after the commission charged.
Canadian / Super Yankee - A Canadian or Super Yankee accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 26 bets involving 5 selections in different events. The bet includes 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds, and the five-fold accumulator, but not the 5 single bets.
Double - A Double is a single bet on 2 selections in different events. Both selections must be successful to win the bet.
Double Accumulator - A Double accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 3 bets involving 2 selections in different events. The bet includes 2 singles and the double accumulator.
Dutch / Dutching - Backing more than one outcome in a single event, normally at variable stakes (according to the odds) to give an equal profit whichever selection is successful.
Each Way - A bet placed on any selection involving two bets, one to win and one to be placed (normally top 3 or 4 places, depending on the number of entrants).
Favourite - the selection in an event with the lowest odds.
Forecast - To predict the first two horses in a race. The horses must finish in the order you predict for your bet to win. See also reverse forecast, where you cover first and second either way round.
Goliath - A Goliath accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 247 bets involving 8 selections in different events. The bet includes 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, 8 seven-folds and the eight-fold accumulator, but not the 8 single bets.
Hedge / Hedging - To Back & Lay the same single outcome in an event, using odds and stakes to guarantee a profit whether the selection wins or loses, or to cut losses.
Heinz - A Heinz accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 57 bets involving 6 selections in different events. The bet includes 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds, and the six-fold accumulator, but not the 6 single bets.
IBAS - (Independent Arbitration Betting Service). An arbitration service which was launched to deal with betting disputes between punters and bookmakers.
Lay - To lay a bet is to oppose an outcome.
Lucky 15 - A Lucky 15 accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 15 bets involving 4 selections in different events. The bet includes 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and the fourfold accumulator.
Lucky 31 - A Lucky 31 accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 31 bets involving 5 selections in different events. The bet includes 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds, and the fivefold accumulator.
Lucky 63 - A Lucky 63 accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 63 bets involving 6 selections in different events. The bet includes 6 singles, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 fivefolds and the sixfold accumulator.
Odds On (Favourite) - A bet where the odds are less than evens (or 2.0 decimal).
Nap - the preferred bet of the day from a tipster.
No Offers - when a bookmaker is unwilling to offer a price on a selection.
Over-broke - Where the odds at an event add up to less than 100%. This means that you can back all possibilities and still make a profit.
Over-round - The amount over 100% the total odds at an event add up to. ie the bookies profit.
Parlay - Alternative term (American) for an Accumulator.
Patent - A Patent accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 7 bets involving 3 selections in different events. The bet includes 3 singles, 3 doubles, and the treble accumulator.
Roll-up - Another term for an Accumulator.
Rule 4 - If a horse is withdrawn and there is insufficient time to form a new market the remaining horses in the race are subject to a deduction if they win or are placed. These are calculated according to the starting price as follows: 3/10 or longer odds - 75p in the £, 2/5 to 1/3 - 70p, 8/15 to 4/9 - 65p, 8/13 to 4/7 - 60p, 4/5 to 4/6 - 55p, 20/21 to 5/6 - 50p, Evens to 6/5 - 45p, 5/4 to 6/4 - 40p, 13/8 to 7/4 - 35p, 15/8 to 9/4 - 30p, 5/2 to 3/1 - 25p, 10/3 to 4/1 - 20p, 9/2 to 11/2 - 15p, 6/1 to 9/1 - 10p, 10/1 to 14/1 - 5p, 14/1+ - unchanged
Single - A single bet on one outcome in one event.
Super Heinz - A Super Heinz accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 120 bets involving 7 selections in different events. The bet includes 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds, and the seven-fold accumulator, but not the 7 single bets.
Treble - A Treble is a single bet on 3 selections in different events. All 3 selections must be successful to win the bet.
Trixie - A Trixie accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 4 bets involving 3 selections in different events. The bet includes 3 doubles, and the treble accumulator, but not the 3 single bets
Wager - Another name for a bet.
Yankee - A Yankee accumulator is a multiple bet consisting of 11 bets involving 4 selections in different events. The bet includes 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and the four-fold accumulator, but not the 4 single bets
